Explain Why

All I will say is this: if you’re white and you have young people in your life, explain to them why the President of the United States posted that video. Tell them the truth of why the sitting President of the United States posted that video of a former President of the United States and a former First Lady of the United States. Use your words and tell them why.

Oh, and to the “my kids aren’t on social media so they didn’t see it” adult, I say, okay… If they didn’t see it or haven’t seen it, you’ve seen it. You saw it, and so you show it to them. Don’t hide it. Don’t make excuses. And after you show it to them, tell them why. They can handle it. Who knows, it may lead to an even better, much longer, and necessary conversation. So, show them the video, explain why it was posted. And then, ask questions and be ready to listen. The scariest part is that they may ask you questions. But you want them to ask, right? You even want them to challenge you to be better, right? Listen, it can be an uncomfortable truth to partner with young people. But, I’m convinced, they make us better. So explain why.

And if you’re thinking, there’s no way I’m going to explain that to them. Ask yourself why. Our young people are watching.
